Two villages beneath seven fells, on the edge of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Quieter than the big Lapland resorts, where the wilderness begins right on your doorstep.
The place
Two villages, seven fells.
Ylläs takes its name from Yllästunturi, the 719-metre fell that rises between the two main villages of the area. Äkäslompolo sits on its northern side, while Ylläsjärvi lies to the south.
Around Yllästunturi are six smaller fells, vast forests, frozen wetlands and the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, one of Finland's most important wilderness areas.
The villages themselves remain small, but wilderness starts remarkably close to the last houses. You can follow maintained trails, climb above the tree line for wide views, or leave the tracks behind and head into deep snow between the trees.
That's what makes Ylläs special: you don't have to travel far to feel properly out there.
